Mobilizing Disciples to Accelerate the Harvest
The Pasi The Pasi people’s identity in Hinduism is reflected in their name, which comes from the Hindi word “pasina,” meaning “sweat.” Hindu mythology tells the story of an avatar of the god Vishnu who makes five men to defend a sacred animal. He creates these men by letting his sweat fall on grass. Throughout India, the Pasi speak 26 different languages, posing a significant challenge in spreading the gospel among them.

The Raigar As landless farmers and leather workers belonging to India’s lowest caste, it’s difficult for the Raigar to make ends meet. The Raigar people’s name originates from their traditional work of tanning leather. Although some have received education and landed decent jobs in cities, many Raigar are illiterate and live in rural villages, forced there by the shunning of upper castes. Since Brahmins refuse to perform religious services for them, the Raigar choose Hindu priests among themselves and make shrines for gods and goddesses in their own villages. They follow traditional Hindu practices such as offering prayer and incense to gods, celebrating festivals like Holi, and paying special tribute to the god Shiva, the destroyer.

The Reang There has been a recent movement to preserve Reang tradition and culture. A museum is being set up to “showcase” cultural aspects of Reang life, such as attire, ornaments, dances and rituals. Traditionally, jhum (shifting) cultivation has been one of the primary agricultural activities of the Reang tribe. However, with land rights being granted, many members of the community have taken to ploughing. While 16 percent of Reangs are “Christian,” there are few Evangelicals. Most Reangs follow Hinduism.

The Sahara Ancestors of the Sahara people are believed to have inhabited the Odisha region of India since the 4th century BCE. Like many other tribes in India, Saharas have adopted a Hindu way of life. The Saharas who live in hilly regions are known for their exceptional ability to traverse uneven terrain. Terraced fields often surround their villages, providing a picturesque display of their skill in building structures to contour the land. The Sahara also place megaliths near their villages to commemorate the dead, as well as large wooden posts to represent their village’s guardian deity.
