The Musahar My people are the Musahar of India. We are considered one of the lowest of the Dalit groups within India and suffer tremendously from our status in society. It is difficult for us to meet many of our basic needs. Any wages we earn are typically in crops that we barter in the market place. Because of our extreme poverty, we do not have access to proper education, health care, or nutrition. My people typically follow our tribal faiths, family deities, village deities, and the gods of the wider Hindu faith.

"Muslim Neighbors" “Muslim Neighbors” is how our ministry partners in Odisha, India refer to various Muslim people groups in their state. Although some moved to Odisha from northern India, many descend from indigenous groups that converted to Islam hundreds of years ago. To differentiate themselves from other peoples in Odisha, they speak Urdu, the prestigious language spoken by Muslims in North India. The Muslim peoples of Odia have suffered persecution from Hindus in the past, including a riot in 1991 that burnt down an entire village.

The Pardhan The Pardhan belong to the larger Gond people group of India. After suffering defeat to Aryan invaders long ago, the Pardhan became slaves and were considered untouchables. While agriculture has taken over as their main line of work, they were traditionally known for their skill as musicians. Some Pardhan still perform, mainly for special life events and festivals. But the only income they receive from these performances are donations. They are followers of traditional Hinduism and serve as Hindu priests on some occasions. As a low-caste people, they struggle economically and need access to better education.
