The Binjhal The Binjhal of India migrated from Madhya Pradesh to Odisha where they currently pursue agriculture as their main source of livelihood. They typically worship Hindu gods and goddesses along with a number of natural spirits at the community level. Bindhya Basini is their supreme deity who is believed to look after the welfare of the Binjhals, protecting them from all dangers. The Binjhals are considered a “Scheduled Tribe,” which means their status is acknowledged by national Indian legislation.

The Brahmin The word "Brahmin" in the original Sanskrit language means "supreme self," the highest, or first among castes. A wide range of professions are represented among the Brahmin of India, while many are also Hindu priests. Their relative wealth and broad scope of social acceptance create challenges for sharing the gospel of Christ. The Brahmin peoples' material comfort and high social status can prevent them from recognizing their deepest need for a Savior.

The Chak As a small South/Southeast–Asian people group living in remote areas of the tropical rainforest, the Chak remain unknown to much of the world. For those who live in Myanmar, even their government fails to acknowledge them as a people group. In Bangladesh, the Chak live in the Chittagong Hills area. They are a self–sufficient people, living off hunting and agriculture and rarely interacting with outsiders. In the past, however, powerful people groups influenced the Chak, leading them into the snare of Buddhism that still holds many of them today.

The Chaudhari The Chaudhari of India live mainly in southeastern Gujarat State. They are considered low-caste by the surrounding culture, and as such, do not have access to many modern conveniences or education. The Chaudhari follow Hindu traditions that are strongly influenced by animism. This means that in addition to worshiping the pantheon of Hindu gods and goddesses, they also worship their own tribal deities.

The Darzi Darzi people group of India are also known by the name “Darji” or “Khayyat.” It is believed that they derived their name from the Persian word “to sew” or darzan, probably indicating a historical tie with the trade of tailoring among this people group. A majority of Darzis follow the Hindu faith but about one-third are Muslim. Our ministry partners in the state of West Bengal work among the Muslim Darzi.

The Deha The Deha people’s original home is Haryana State in Northwest India. Even today, very few Deha live outside of Haryana and neighboring states. However, they stand apart from other peoples in their native region by speaking their own Deha dialect of the Haryanvi language. They also have their own religious leaders to perform Hindu rituals, rather than depending on traditional Brahmin priests. In the past, the Deha would work as weavers, making winnowing fans for harvest. Currently, selling clothes is their most common occupation. As a low-caste people, the Deha people lack education and need economic development.
